It is an Excellent Tool for Translations. I have also noted the hospital Spanish interpreters using this book in their daily routine contact with Spanish speaking patients. This Spanish/English Medical dictionary is the most comprehensive and thorough one I have owned. Well worth the cost if only for reference.
No matter what area of the health care field you specialize in the question or answer can be pretty much found in the book. It is broken up into different sections. -A useful dictionary of medical terms for Spanish speakers -A useful dictionary of medical terms for English speakers - Grammar sections called Conversion Tables which includes - a quick section of common root words, verbs, prefixes and suffixes relating to diagnosis and symptoms etc.- this section is very dry and most people will bypass it. -Very brief section on accenting/pronunciation - would be better to type in the word in the computer and search on the net how to pronounce a word than use this book - A Communicating with Patients section devoted to medical questions/phrases for all types of exams- very helpful and comprehensive. -Short section of Spanish and English- consent and authorization forms (such as for surgery, tests) I think any office with a large Spanish speaking base will use these forms. -Finally a color photo section of the human anatomy which delineates tissue, organs etc. In Spanish and English- very straightforward and useful.
Thoughts I would really just use this book for quick reference. Without having much knowledge of Spanish all the Conversion Tables/Grammar sections are too much work. I think the main sections of the book that are helpful are the: dictionary, common phrases/questions, and labeled color anatomy areas. The one big gap is that this book really doesn't demonstrate how you pronounce the words correctly. The other Spanish Medical books I have for my office are much smaller but they include a phrase and then under it exactly how to pronounce them.
This one does not. I was wincing as I tried saying out loud words that I was not familiar with. I am sure I butchered them horribly. Practice helps and of course patients who are grateful will be helpful at correcting errors but another way to check the internet.
There are sites that help people pronounce Spanish words online- if you have the time. It would be nice if the book came with a disc that pronounces certain key phrases/questions or terms that you could download on your computer. Great `go to' reference book for medical terms, anatomy and quick ways of communicating with the patient but who knows if you can actually pronounce them correctly! I'm a pharmacist in an area where about half my patients don't speak English.
I'm always looking for more resources to help them. This book is useful as a more extensive resource. It has more detailed and extensive medical terms than I've found in any other book. Just about any medical terminology you can think of is in here. However, I've found that a lot of the things in this book are more complex terms like I'd use when speaking with another health care provider instead of what I'd use to explain things to patients (even the English translations).
In that same area of problem, a lot of the translations sound much more formal than the way my patients speak. I've been discussing insurance and billing with my customers for over ten years, and these are not the words that they use. I asked one patient that speaks some English, and he told me this book was more formal, which makes sense with my overall impression of the book. In general, this is a great reference if you need to look up something more detailed or 'bigger' medical words and terminology, but I think you'd be better off with a pocket translator for everyday needs. Before I close this review, I will mention a few things I did really like about this book. It has glossy color pictures of human anatomy with translations of all of the body parts (not just what you'd find in Spanish 101 book, but detailed medical terms).
There are example legal documents in English and Spanish such as informed consent papers and living wills. There are separate sections that have everything all together for common things like signs of a heart attack or what you might ask in an ambulance. Still, even in those sections, some of the things the authors chose to tell you how to say seem a bit odd. The regular dictionaries are very deficient in giving anything more than the basics for anatomy and the medical field. This one is easy to use and gets the job done.
It is comprehensive and covers a wide range one needs in the medical field. This dictionary comes with a renderings guide in back with both Spanish and English words for basic anatomy, the skeleton, the skull, muscles of the head, deep structures of the neck, cerebral hemispheres, the function of the heart, the lymphatic system, the respiratory system, abdominal cavity including the peritoneum, the male and female reproductive system and fetal circulation including placenta. Some renderings are included in the dictionary itself such as eye and skin anatomy, but renderings in the dictionary itself are few and far between. The dictionary includes sexual transmitted disease info, nutrition, medical testing, physical fitness, medications, newborn information and so forth. It won't go into huge details on anything but beyond the basics are well covered. There is also a handy verb and grammar section that actually is quite useful.
There is a living will statement which was a nice bonus. I also like the conversion tables and abbreviations section, medical phrases and even giving regular and irregular verbs as well as weights and measures. This dictionary goes beyond the basics and is all one needs for a general knowledge of Spanish to English or English to Spanish in the medical field.
Will it give you every nook and cranny? No, but for most people this dictionary is more than sufficient. A definite plus for anyone's library.

So far I haven't found any significant errors, except for a few page number mistakes. It's very thorough- even when we use interpretors, they find it immensely helpful on specific medical terminology.
